Irregular Play: The Clause That Voids Crypto Winnings

Of all the ways a bonus can be taken away after the fact, one clause does most of the work. It is usually two or three sentences long, it sits in the bonus terms under a heading like irregular play, bonus abuse or advantage play, and it reserves the operator's right to void a bonus and any winnings derived from it.

Unlike a wagering requirement, it has no number in it. That is precisely why it is worth reading before you accept an offer rather than after a withdrawal is refused.

What the clause is actually for
A deposit bonus is a marketing cost with a predicted value. The operator's model assumes a player who plays roughly like other players: a spread of bets, a mix of games, a session pattern that looks like entertainment. A player who instead treats the requirement as an arithmetic problem — betting in a way that minimises variance and runs the turnover through at the lowest possible cost — converts the offer from marketing into a withdrawal. The irregular-play clause exists so the operator can decline to pay in that case without having to list every method in advance.
Whether that is fair is a reasonable argument to have, and it is not the argument that matters when your own withdrawal is sitting in review. What matters is that the clause is standard, enforceable under the terms you accepted, and applied by people looking at your bet history.
The patterns that get named
Wording differs between operators, but the behaviours described cluster into a handful of types.
Low-risk and equal-coverage betting
Covering most of a roulette layout, betting both sides of an even-money proposition, or playing a table game in a way that leaves little outcome exposure while the turnover counter advances. This is the most frequently cited pattern and the easiest to detect, because it shows up as a run of bets with near-identical returns.
Bet-size patterns around the requirement
Very large bets early in the wagering, then a collapse to minimum stakes once a win lands. Operators describe this as using the bonus to buy a high-variance shot and then protecting the result. Some terms set an explicit maximum bet instead, which is a far better position for a player, because a number can be complied with.
Game switching that follows the contribution table
Clearing the requirement on a game with 100 % contribution and a low edge, then moving the balance to a different game once the wagering is complete. This one is tricky, because the contribution table invites exactly that reading; what operators object to is the pattern applied mechanically across several bonuses.
Multiple accounts and shared identity
Here the clause overlaps with the duplicate-account provisions, and in crypto it reaches further than players expect: a shared device, a shared network, or deposits funded from the same wallet or exchange account can all be treated as linkage, regardless of what names are on the accounts.
Bonus-only play across many sites
Some terms describe a player whose entire history consists of a deposit, a bonus, exactly enough turnover and a withdrawal, repeated. Nothing in that sequence breaks any individual rule. The clause nevertheless covers it.
Why crypto accounts are judged on thinner evidence
At a fiat casino, identity is anchored by a card or a bank transfer, and that anchor is doing more work than players realise: it tells the operator who you are before any behaviour is analysed. A crypto account that was opened with an email address has no such anchor, so the behavioural layer carries the whole weight. Three consequences follow.
First, pattern detection is tuned more aggressively, because it is the primary tool rather than a secondary one. Second, linkage between accounts is inferred from device, network and on-chain signals, and an on-chain signal is permanent and public in a way a card number is not — two accounts funded from the same exchange withdrawal address are linked forever. Third, a review that would be resolved at a fiat site by confirming identity has nothing equivalent to resolve it, which is why crypto bonus disputes tend to end in the operator's position standing.
How to read the clause before you accept
You cannot make the clause go away, but you can tell a tolerable version from an intolerable one in about three minutes.
- Is there an explicit maximum bet while wagering? A stated number is the single most useful sentence in a bonus term, because compliance becomes checkable rather than a matter of opinion. A bonus without one leaves bet size entirely to the irregular-play clause.
- Does it describe behaviours or merely reserve a right? Terms that list the patterns they object to are enforceable in a way you can plan around. Terms that say only that the operator may void winnings at its sole discretion give you nothing to comply with.
- Is the game contribution table published, and does it match the clause? If the table says a game contributes fully and the clause then treats play on it as abuse, those two sentences are in conflict and you will not be the one who resolves it.
- What happens to the deposit? Better terms void the bonus and the bonus-derived winnings and return the player's own deposit. Worse terms allow forfeiture of the entire balance. This distinction is worth more than any difference in the headline percentage.
- Is there a maximum cash-out? If so, the arithmetic of the offer is capped and the clause matters less, because the upside was never large.
If it has already been applied to you
Ask, in writing, which specific bets or which specific pattern the decision rests on, and ask for the clause by its number. A reply that names a pattern gives you something to dispute or accept. A reply that only cites the clause is worth taking to the licensing authority's complaints route or to the alternative dispute resolution body named in the footer — the operator's licence usually obliges it to engage with one, and a vague reasoning stands up poorly there. Keep your bet history before you escalate; an account can be closed while a complaint is pending.
Gambling is for adults and losing is the expected outcome; a bonus is an advertising instrument, not income, and treating it as income is the quickest route to playing more than you meant to. If that has started to happen, the services on our responsible gambling page are free and independent of any operator.
